Remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the 11th International Symposium on Nano & Supramolecular Chemistry (ISNSC-11) and the 3rd World Forum on Industrial Minerals (WFIM-3)

Good morning!
 
I am delighted to be here among old friends at this conference.  I would like to thank Chunhui, and Yang for their kind invitation to attend this conference.    
 
As I am almost becoming obsolete as a researcher, I don’t have much to talk about nano-and-supramolecular chemistry.  But I will say a few words in general about the global challenges facing every country, and give my personal perspective on how we as scientists and engineers can make a contribution to finding solutions to address these challenges. 
 
Among the top 10 grand challenges humanity is facing in this century are clean energy and environment, climate change, water resources, health particularly aging population and poverty.  There is no doubt that the solutions to many of these challenges will come from scientific discoveries and innovation. The rapid acceleration of digital transformations such as in AI, big data, 5G telecommunication, robotics and autonomous transportation (which the University of Surrey is famous for) will lead to advanced technologies to change the way we work, live, travel and play.  
 
However, the fundamental building blocks underpinning smart devices and systems are minerals and materials. Clean energy conversion, transmission and storage is a key area of research and development, which I have been working in. Renewable energy such as solar and wind are promising for reducing carbon emissions, and also providing clean water supply as well.  Health issues will need advanced medical devices and drugs in which areas nano-and-supramolecular materials can play a key role.    
 
It is obvious to this audience that, as science becomes an endeavor for teams, innovation requires more and more cross disciplinary and international collaborations. 
 
This conference focusing on nano-and supramolecular chemistry and industrial minerals is a good example for cross-field collaboration.  I congratulate the organizers who combine ISNSC11 with the Third Forum on Industrial Minerals (WFIM-3), under the theme of “Fusion of Supramolecular Chemistry, Nanotechnology and Industrial Mineralogy”.
 
As I am aware, the city where we meet today, Qingyang, is rich in industrial minerals such as limestone and dolomite. Many processing and manufacturing industries have been developed here because of the strong support of local government and Qingyang Institute for Industrial Minerals. I heard that the total 2019 output of minerals industries here in Youhua amount to 2 billion RMB, increased by 30% from 2018. These industrial minerals are key materials for construction, chemicals, paper-making, drilling, polymers, environmental engineering, and animal farming. Some non-metallic minerals are good feed stock or fillers for biomaterials and drugs, nanostructured functional materials. All these industries are important to economic development and improving people’s lives. 
 
I am very impressed with the beautiful scenery and the warm welcome by the local hosts here in Chizhou, where lies the Jiuhuashan World Geopark (classified by UNESCO).  I hope you will have an opportunity to have a tour there.
 
Finally, I wish everyone enjoy the conference – good opportunity to rekindle old friendship and establish new ones. Hopefully by working together more, we can have better chance to find innovative solutions to industry’s problems today and tomorrow, as well as the global challenges facing our society.
 
I wish the conferences ISNSC 11 and WFIM-3 a great success. Thank you very much.

上午好!
 
我很高兴能和老朋友们一起参加这次会议。感谢春晖和Kim Yang盛情邀请我参加这次会议。
从作为研究人员的角度,我觉得我几乎要落伍了。因此,我不过多评说纳米和超分子化学。籍此我想就下列问题谈点个人的看法:
每一个国家面临的全球性挑战是什么?作为科学家和工程师如何迎面这些挑战和为找到解决方案做出贡献?
 
在本世纪人类面临的10大挑战中,有清洁能源和环境、气候变化、水资源、医疗健康、老龄化、贫困等问题。毫无疑问,这些问题的解决,有赖于科学进步和技术创新。人工智能、大数据、5G通信、机器人和自动运输等数字加速交换带来了很多先进技术(萨里大学在这些方面都很有影响),显著改变着我们的工作、生活、旅行和娱乐方式。
然而,智能设备和系统的基本构建单元,根本上还要源自矿物和材料。清洁能源的生产、传输和储存是我一直致力于研究和开发的一个关键领域。可再生能源如太阳能和风能,能减少碳排放,并能用于清洁的水供应。解决健康问题,需要先进的医疗设备和药物,其中纳米和超分子材料可以发挥关键作用。
 
显然,当代科学研究需要团队努力工作,技术创新需要更多的跨学科和国际合作。
本次会议关注纳米、超分子化学和非金属矿物,是跨领域合作的一个很好的范例。就此,我祝贺第十一届国际纳米和超分子化学会议(ISNSC11 )暨  第三届非金属矿科技和产业论坛(WFIM-3)”的组委会,祝贺您们将探讨和发展“超分子化学、纳米技术和非金属矿物产业”相融合。
 
据悉,本届会议地—安徽省池州市青阳县非金属矿资源丰富,尤以石灰石和白云石矿为甚。在当地政府和青阳非金属矿研究院等大力支持下,非金属矿加工和制造业已经在这里蓬勃发展。我还了解到,青阳县酉华镇今年非金属矿工业总产值逼近20亿元,和2018同比增加了30%左右。这些非金属矿物是建筑、化工、造纸、钻井、聚合物、环境工程和动物养殖的关键材料,也是生物材料、药物、纳米功能材料的原料。这些产业和产品,对经济发展和改善人民生活都很重要。
 
池州、青阳的美景和当地人们的热情都给我留下了深刻的印象。这里也是“九华山世界地质公园”所在地。希望大家有时间出去观览。
 
最后,我祝愿大家享受这次会议——重叙旧谊、结交新朋。希望我们通过更多的合作和共同努力,发现机遇,更好地找到解决今天和明天的工业问题的创新方案,贡献于解决社会面临的全球性挑战。

Professor Max Lu:世界著名材料化学家,澳大利亚技术科学与工程院院士、澳大利亚科学院院士、发展中国家科学院院士  ,英国萨里大学校长。
 
2000年担任昆士兰大学纳米材料中心主任;
2002年当选为澳大利亚技术科学与工程院院士,是历史上最年轻的院士;
2003年被聘为澳大利亚联邦教授;
2006年入选香港凤凰周刊评选出的“影响世界未来50华人榜”;
2009年担任昆士兰大学副校长;
2011年获得中华人民共和国国际科学技术合作奖  ;
2012年起担任常务副校长,是澳洲大学历史上首位华裔副校长;
2013年当选为澳大利亚科学院院士 ;
2016年4月起任英国萨里大学校长,是改革开放后的中国留学生中,首位出任英国大学正校长的华裔学者 。

2019年9月 又入选英国皇家工程院院士

Professor G Q Max Lu  
 
Professor Max Lu is President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey.
He is a member of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology, and is on the Boards of UKRI, the National Physical Laboratory, Universities UK, and the Leadership Council of the National Centre for Universities and Business. Locally, he also serves as Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey and a patron of the charity Transform.
 
Professor Lu lectured at Nanyang Technological University from 1991 to 1994. He then held various academic and leadership positions at the University of Queensland, eventually serving as Provost and Senior Vice-President, before arriving at Surrey in April 2016.
 
At Queensland, Professor Lu founded the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Functional Nanomaterials, and served as its director for eight years. He was awarded the Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship in 2003 and in 2008.
 
A pre-eminent chemical engineer and nanotechnologist, Professor Lu is one of only 150 double highly cited academics in the world. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed articles in top journals, attracting more than 56,000 citations.
 
He is co-inventor of more than 20 granted international patents, and has been honoured with numerous awards including, recently, the Medal of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to education, international research and Sino-Australian relations.
